Ending the week on a positive note…

Happy Galentine’s and Valentine’s Day weekend. This has been quite a week, but being busy helps the weekend come faster? Not sure, but Friday feels like it comes a lot faster these days. With February being Black History Month, I thought I would take some time to mention some Black occupational therapy practitioners as part of my weekly recap.

Occupational Therapy

Wimberly Edwards, MS, OTR (otcentennial.org)

Shirley Jackson-Jackson, PhD, OT/L, FAOTA (otcentennial.org)

OT Writing Group: Occupational Therapy Writing Group Publish or perish is the motto at Universities. However, publishing in not only for educators. Writing is an opportunity to impart knowledge to other clinicians in your specialty area. This group is based in Great Britain, so the time differential comes into play here. However, there is an opportunity to write for the blog as well: Write for us! – Glasgow Caledonian University Occupational Therapy Blog

Free Continuing Education ‹ OT Caroline Finding free CEUs is always difficult. The list from AOTA is amazing and ends soon! Here is another free CEU opportunity: Upcoming free DLF webinars – OT Magazine (ot-magazine.co.uk)

Research

Occupational balance in people with type-2 diabetes: A comparative cross-sectional study – Maryam Binesh, Rokhsareh Aghili, Afsoon Hassani Mehraban, 2021 (sagepub.com) The results in the summary of the article really struck me: “Distress was the only bio-psychological factor associated with occupational balance in people with diabetes. A higher level of distress is associated with lower occupational balance and also poor glycemic control in this population.” With food being used to celebrate or as a mode of comfort, having a constricted diet that can negatively impact your health and ultimately your ability to engage in occupational roles. Role for OT includes access to resources to modify favorite recipes, determining questions to ask nutritionist, and using Health Literacy Tool Shed Diabetes Resources to guide health literacy.

Long-Term Follow-Up of a Lifestyle Intervention for Late-Midlife, Rural-Dwelling Latinos in Primary Care | American Journal of Occupational Therapy (aota.org) Results: “A lifestyle intervention led by occupational therapy practitioners and community health workers in a primary care context has potential to achieve long-term health benefits in rural-dwelling, late-midlife Latinos.” The implications of this study with occupational therapy practitioners addressing lifestyle choices to impact occupational engagement is beyond exciting!

Feasibility of Remote Occupational Therapy Services via Telemedicine in a Breast Cancer Recovery Program | American Journal of Occupational Therapy (aota.org) With the focus on the role of OT with clients with cancer and telehealth practice, this research is timely.

Driver Rehabilitation Utilization and Need Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults | American Journal of Occupational Therapy (aota.org) Driver rehab is one practice area that is not only growing, but also much needed. I have been fortunate enough to see a Driver Rehab clinic and the tools that are used to determine the ability to drive are objective and thorough. It is a lot easier to broach the subject of driving with an older family member with the objective results of an evaluation.
